Can you really mow too much or not enough to affect your lawn?

Mowing your lawn is one way of keeping it healthy and lush but knowing how to properly mow is another issue. Every type of grass requires a certain mowing range. If you cut your grass too much, your lawn can become shallow-rooted and can be prone to drought, stress, and sunburn. On the other hand, if you don’t mow it enough, the grass will eventually weaken and look like a grassland and be infested by weeds. Do not get too excited to mow your lawn, remember that proper timing is important. When the grass reaches the recommended height for moving then that’s the time to act. Here are a few pointers in mowing properly in order to preserve the health of your lawn.

  1. Set your lawn mower on the highest recommended setting for the type of grass you have, and cut only ⅓ of the top part. This is because a grass that’s perfectly mowed can grow, accommodate more roots, and can establish a deep root system. If you cut it too much you scalp your lawn and it can cause the grass to grow their blades but not deepen the roots and can make your lawn susceptible to weed infestation. Most types of grass require your lawn mower to be set to its highest recommended setting, although there are some grass types like centipedegrass and zoysiagrass that require a middle setting while Bermudagrass and bentgrass need the lowest settings.
  2. A dry lawn is best for mowing. Do not mow your grass when wet as it can result in an inconsistent cut. Also, wet clippings can up damage your lawn mower.
  3. Mow your lawn only when necessary. During springtime, mowing can be done 2x a week while during summer, every other week will do. Mow your lawn as needed according to the type of grass you have, growth pattern, growing conditions, and season. With a new lawn, wait until your grass reaches its mowing height because if you cut it right away, it can stress and shock the new grass.
  4. Diversify your movement when mowing. Lawn mowing in different directions can help to avoid compacting the soil and your grass will grow tall and stand up as it leans naturally in the way you mow.
  5. If possible, leave the grass clippings on your lawn. Grass clippings break down easily, giving out nitrogen along with other nutrients into the soil.
  6. Do not mow your grass with a dull blade as it can tear up your grass, which can cause a grayish brown color. Sharpen your lawn mower blade or replace it with a new one right away when needed.
